Biotiums safe GelRed is an intercalating nucleic acid dye used for agarose gel staining of DNA after electrophoresis.
GelRed structurally consists of two ethidium subunits that are bridged by a linear oxygenated spacer.
Bulk 10 ml GelRed is a fluorophore with the same properties as ethidium bromide.
When exposed to ultraviolet light, it fluoresces with an orange color that strongly intensifies after binding to DNA.
Gelred from Biotium is marketed as a less toxic and more sensitive alternative to ethidium bromide.
Bulk GelRed is sold as a 10 mililiter solution in ultrapurified water.
GelRed is unable to cross cell membranes.
